Bearings South Neighborhood
Built in 1941 as garden-style apartments and originally called Boulevard of Old Town apartments, the seven buildings of the Bearings were converted into a condominium community in 2006. The 158 units combine solid, red-brick construction with contemporary finishes such as granite countertops, Brazilian hardwood floors, crown molding, and stainless-steel kitchen appliances.
LocationThe Bearings condos are found between S. Washington St. and S. Columbus between Church and Green. Located in the 800 block of South Washington Street, The Bearings opens to the brick sidewalks and shade trees of Old Town, the oldest part of Alexandria – originally laid out in 1749 – and a nationally designated historic district. Immediately to the south is St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery, the oldest public Catholic cemetery in Virginia and the oldest active cemetery in all of Alexandria.
CommuteThe Old Town Alexandria is well-served by DASH buses and the King St. Trolley. The nearby King St. Metro Station serves the Yellow and Blue Lines and is at the northern end of the Carlyle District. The Virginia Railway Express Alexandria Station also stops nearby at King St.
South SideThe Bearings are located in Alexandria's South Side not far from the Beltway and from Cameron Run. There are a number of shops, restaurants and services located in the immediate vicinity. The Bearings is about 4 blocks from King St.---the traditional heart of Old Town Alexandria. The Bearings is also across the street from the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail which provides easy access to the Potomac. The Bearings fronts to Washington St. which is the George Washington National Parkway.
